Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Owner Penalties

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Public Attention

The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
