British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
