In a inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
